070308FS07.jpgI just returned home from Russia where I went skiing with the Oakley/Redbull girls team in Krasyana Polyana. This was my first time to Russia, so I didn’t really know what to expect. The trip turned out excellent and very educational. We got a little skunked with rain in the beginning, but then it snowed and the sun came out and the trip was on. We experienced everything from being beaten with tree branches in the sauna, to not being able to heli-ski because Prime Minister Vladamir Putin was using the heli for his own skiing pleasure and house-keepers splitting out of town because the K.G.B. was after them.

Back From Russia!

150308FS20.jpgHey Everyone! We just got back from an epic trip to Krasnaya Polyana in Russia. The terrain there is sick! Some epic lines were slayed and much fun was had.

gsolitude.jpgI’m back home in Salt Lake and it feels good. I’ve been working on a lot of different things since I’ve been back. Mainly, just planning out the rest of my winter. I went up to Solitude on Wednesday with Freeskier for their annual ski test. It was fun cruising around with the “Freeskier Gang A.K.A. Shaywill, Nicole, Harvey, you know who you are.” The first day skiing back in Utah was epic as usual, fresh pow, no big deal. I’m going to Russia in March so I’ve had to be on the phone a lot with the Russian Embassy and sending a bunch of things in, but it looks like they’re going to let me in after all. Valentines Day was fabulous.. “Best V-Day Ever!” I went and saw “Step Up 2,” go see it! Best quote from the movie was, “If the 410 doesn’t want us in here, we’ll be outside where the streets started!” If that doesn’t make you want to dance then you can just call any of us in the 801 and we’ll take it to the streets with you.

We’re back at Retallack, out in the middle of somewhere, right where we started two years ago. It’s still the same crew, the same good vibes. Phil’s running the show, but with a monster ‘stache now. Karl’s driving the cat, same Oakley blades. Kevin and Dem are still guiding. It feels like a lifetime ago I took that first trip up here. It feels like a million things have happened since. I can’t quite explain it. Time seems to stand still up here.

The snow is falling. It’s always falling. This time around we’ve got Sammy C. and the Pettit bros with us.  It’s the best crew we’ve had yet on a shoot. No bullshit, no drama, everyone’s ultra focused and read to shred. It’s been pretty cool getting Sammy and the Pettits up here and initiating them into the Retallack family.

Sammy nailed down bangers right out of the gate, with a monster 7 over the cat road. Sean skied a crazy pillow run down a creek drainage (check video). I thought I was watching a Mario Bros. video game. Callum’s a crazy genius, launching a sick natural 3 off a huge cliff, easy 40.

The snow just keeps falling. It never stops. We’ve been charging for eight straight days, shooting non-stop. The pow is so blower, it’s the best snow we’ve seen yet. It’s noon and our last day before heading home. We just finished a film run and are rumbling up the mountain in the snowcat. Everyone’s quiet, beat down and tired. I’m sitting back and thinking we’ve got so much footage in the can.  I turn to everyone and make the call, “free runs for the rest of the day!”

Karl pulls the cat to the top. We all jump out and throw our shit on as quickly as we can. Kevin lines us all up at the top and gives us the beta on the run, don’t go too far left, all that. CP and I partner up, we’re jockeying for first position. Kev gives us the green light and next thing I know I’m waist deep in fluff. And that’s pretty much how it all ended. Four epic pow runs at Retallack, I couldn’t ask for it any better.

It must be Winter X Games time, Swedish sensation, Jon Olsson heads back to Aspen for a little taste of American cuisine and hopefully a little gold as well. No doubt Jon has been enjoying his season around the globe but it will be great to get the whole team together at Winter X!
